Äme Anderberg recently announced that his days as a top cyclist are soon to be over. Going in to his final season in Season 11, Anderberg has accomplished a lot in his career. He has won the prestigious Germany Tour twice in a row as well as the World Championships road race twice along with many other races. Recently, Anderberg has been riding in Poland taken two wins, one of them however being a 1.1 race. He's now ready for a final performance in the upcoming Germany Tour - that is if the team even gets an invite.
Team Zyte has been troubled during the last two seasons, and it would be the first time in the history that the team wouldn't take part in the most prestigious tour, however, things aren't as good as they once were. Team Zyte used to be in the top 10, but is now struggling to stay within top 30. As the organizers of Germany Tour search the absolute top teams - the rank of 29th might just not cut it. But what is the Germany Tour without Äme Anderberg? We might soon enough know.
When Swedish Äme Anderberg joined Team Zyte back in Season 2, he was said to be one of the biggest talents in the history of cycling. His career also reflects this very statement. He was discovered by talents scout during a local race in Sweden - Stockholm Tour where he finished 2nd, at that time riding for the Swedish team Monsters Inc. Team Zyte insisted on getting Anderberg to the team, and after long negotiations with his former team, it finally happened. He quickly showed his potential and grew into the team becoming the most important front figure for the team, which since then has built around him for many seasons.
When Äme Anderberg entered Germany Tour for the first time (Season 3), he did a great performance including a victory in the King's Stage followed by a 9th place in the General Classifications despite the fact that he was riding for his captain, Arnold Schurman who disappointed and finished 14th in the overall. The next season was just as good for Anderberg who again worked hard for Schurman. Once again, Anderberg conquered the King's Stage in Munich and took the 10th overall while Arnold Schurman finished 5th. Surprisingly, Danish Jørg Mølgård - another team mate of Anderberg - took the overall win and received a very strong back-up big the king of the mountains himself. Anderberg quickly went on to the World Championships using his perfect shape to create the first highlight of his career. Äme Anderberg became the world champion.
When the Germany Tour of Season 5th was coming up, team manager Nick Lissner realized that both Mølgård and Schurman were unable to perform well enough to win due to their shape, Äme Anderberg was picked as the captain - and what a choice. Anderberg, riding in the prestigious World Champion jersey, dominated the full tour, finishing in top 3 in 5 stages, including the King's Stage, which resulted in the overall win. At this point, Team Zyte was the first team to win the Tour twice - even in a row.
Anderberg followed up on the success by winning yet another edition of the Germany Tour in the next season (Season 6), but couldn't quite live up to the expectations in Season 7. Anderberg faced a strong competitor, Elias Márquez from Team Weeny, who dominated the tour like never before. Anderberg finished 6th while Márquez started his yet un-ended strike of 3 wins in a row. The modest Anderberg later competed in the World Championships securing another great victory for himself and his team.
Since then, the team, including Äme Anderberg, changed its focus. From here on, the development of talent was the aim. And who would be a better mentor than the greatest climber of all time as Anderberg got known as? The change did of course affect the results, which however Anderberg wasn't unhappy with. He was quoted to be happy with his accomplishments and that he hopes to be able to help others in the future.
A great rider is about to retire and Team Zyte is facing a massive loss, as the team already lost many important profiles due to the retirement age kicking in. Anderberg will however always be remembered, and he has yet one season left to show his worth, though his ambitions are probably lowered. The team is making a plead to the organizers of Germany Tour that they'll approve the team - the decision is in their hands.
